GHS 7 Implementation in Australia Postponed

Safe Work Australia (SWA), Australia's national authority for work health and safety, announced that the adoption of the 7th revised edition of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) will be delayed by six months to the 1st of January 2021.

The SWA said that the GHS Revision 7 would be officially employed starting from 1st July 2020, with a two-year transitional period given to manufacturers and importers of chemicals.

However, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Australian businesses, the members of the SWA have agreed to delay the start date of the full two-year transitional period to the 1st of January 2021.

The SAW press release also stated,

To ensure that any importers and manufacturers that had already begun work on implementing GHS 7 are not disadvantaged, state and territory governments will put in place regulatory arrangements allowing businesses to start classifying and labelling chemicals in accordance with GHS 7 from 1 July 2020.”

With these arrangements in place, suppliers and end-users will also be able to supply and use GHS Revision 7 labelled chemicals. SAW are currently working on some guidance to support businesses to aid them in the transition to GHS 7.
