Biocidal Product Families - EU and GB BPR

Whitepaper by Adam Thickett at Yordas Group

It is very common for companies to produce a range of biocidal products with similar compositions and the same intended functions with only small differences between them. For example, they could produce a range of bleach products with different fragrances or a concentrate for dilution and a ready-to-use diluted version of the same formulation.

Typically, under the principles of the Biocidal Products Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 528/2012, BPR) in the EU and GB, each individual formulation should be evaluated and approved before being placed on the market. However, this would require a lot of duplication of work on the behalf of applicants and regulatory authorities, for companies with multiple similar products. To reduce the regulatory burden, the BPR included the concept of a biocidal product family (BPF) dossier to combine multiple products into a single application.
