Product Environmental Footprint

In a Nutshell

Whitepaper by Damon Waterworth at Yordas Group

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is currently the best available tool for quantifying the potential environmental impacts of products on the market. However, challenges such as access to high-quality data and a lack of comparability of results have prompted the European Commission to develop a harmonised method as part of the Single Market for Green Products Initiative. The Environmental Footprint (EF) is an LCA-based initiative, developed according to existing approaches and international standards, which can be applied at the product or organisational level. In this whitepaper, we discuss how the EF is applied at the product level (through the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) scheme). In addition, we provide a comparison with existing LCA methods and discuss the wider implications for EU policy and labelling.
