What is the SCIP database?
From 5 January 2021, companies supplying articles containing Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) on the REACH Candidate List in a concentration of 0.1% w/w or above need to notify their information via the new SCIP database. SCIP stands for substances of concern in articles, as such or in complex objects (products).
The new database – which will be made available to waste operators and consumers – ensures that information on products containing SVHCs is available throughout the product’s whole lifecycle, including the waste stage.
The SCIP database is intended to make the sorting of waste easier and improve the quality of recycled materials. The information is collected by ECHA under the Waste Framework Directive (WFD).
What is the SCIP database prototype?
ECHA has launched a prototype of their upcoming SCIP database for companies to get familiar with before the actual notifications are due, beginning January 2021. Note that the actual database will be launched later in 2020, and all submitted data in the prototype will be deleted.

Who needs to submit information to the SCIP database?
Producers, assemblers, importers, distributors of articles and other actors who place articles on the EU market.
