UK REACH: Proposed Deadline Extensions
The UK Government is currently consulting on proposals to extend the transitional registration submission deadlines under UK REACH. These deadlines, currently set for October 2026, 2028, and 2030, are crucial for businesses registering chemical substances on the Great Britain (GB) market.
Why the extension? The extension is necessary because the detailed design of the UK REACH Alternative Transitional Registration Model (ATRm) is still under review. This ensures that the government has sufficient time to finalise the ATRm and for industry to prepare to comply, as legislative changes and a suitable transition period cannot be completed before the current first deadline in October 2026.
Proposed New Deadlines (Under Consultation):
Option 1: October 2029, October 2030, October 2031 (Government's Preferred)
Option 2: April 2029, April 2031, April 2033
Option 3: April 2029, April 2030, April 2031
Option 1 is preferred as it allows adequate time to finalise the ATRm and provides industry with approximately a two-year transition period. The consultation also seeks views on extending the dates for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to carry out compliance checks on 20% of registration dossiers, aligning them with any new submission dates.
Who should respond? This public consultation welcomes views from all stakeholders, especially those involved in the registration process, including the chemical industry, downstream users, NGOs, and other interested parties.
The consultation is open until 8 September 2025. Your feedback is essential to shaping a practical and balanced approach for both regulators and industry.
