Identification of major hazard installations for hazardous chemicals updated in National Standard

On 19th November, China General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine updated National Standard GB 18218-2018. GB 18218-2018 is the compulsory national standard for identification of major hazard installations for hazard chemicals. The new standard will come into force on 1st March 2019.

GB 18218-2018 includes definitions that are necessary for hazardous management (defined terms include: hazardous chemicals, major hazard installations for hazardous chemicals etc.) and provides a list of National Standards essential for implementing GB 18218-2018. All companies engaged in the production, use, storage and operation of hazardous chemicals are obliged to use the criteria and methods in GB 18218 to identify major hazard installations. The classification index of the hazard installation (the R value) is calculated taking into consideration the number of people near the site, the quantity and the hazard classification of the chemicals on the production/storage site.
